What is Radonland?

If you live on the East Coast between the Carolinas and Maine, you are sitting on geological features that contain uranium. Uranium is a radioactive element, and like all radioactive elements, it decays. In this case, it decays into radium and then radon.

What does this mean for you? Your house is a closed box sitting on top of the ground. The ground is burping many soil gases into the atmosphere every day and night. One of these is radon, a class A carcinogen. Once your house is closed during the construction process, it begins to pull on the ground bringing various soil gases into your home. Your house is literally a giant vacuum sucking on the ground. It doesn’t matter if it is a conventional basement, a crawlspace, or a slab on grade - the vacuum effect begins as soon as the house is closed. Welcome to Radonland!

As a result, radon concentrations on the East Coast and particularly Central Pennsylvania, tend to be elevated. No level of radiation is good for you. The current standards call for all homes that contain levels above 4 PcI/L (picocuries) to be mitigated. Reducing the radon level in your home to below 4 PcI/L is a simple, straightforward home improvement. Give us a call today to schedule your free estimate!
